The following information has been designed to answer some of the frequently asked questions at Beyond the Box Photography, from wardrobe selection, to picking up your final products. If you have any questions that are not answered below, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I am more than happy to speak with you on an individual basis.
What is Boudoir Photography?
Boudoir – pronounced bŏo dwăawr comes from French word and is translated as – a woman’s bedroom or a private sitting room. Boudoir photography, therefore, usually takes place in an intimate setting to create classy images that can be soft, romantic, sexy, sensual, or naughty (though you are certainly not limited by where you can have your session – we can even do them outdoors!). The main focus of a boudoir photographer is to capture you in the most flattering way by guiding you through the poses that compliment your body type and capture your personality.
Who should do a Boudoir Session?
Boudoir sessions are special. Everyone has their own reasons for deciding to do this type of session. Many clients want to do these sessions for a husband, boyfriend or significant other. Some want to reclaim that feeling of femininity and feel sexy. Others choose to do this to celebrate a special occasion or a personal achievement, such as weight loss, achieving a level of fitness or other significant life event. Some just want to do it because it’s fun! It is a great way to reclaim some “me time.”
Will my session be with a female photographer?
Yes! With such personal portraits it is reassuring for both you and the man in your life that Beyond the Box Photography is an all female team including the makeup artist, hairstylist, photographer, and retouch artist. We have a strict “no boys allowed” policy in any of our sessions or around the photos while they are being edited and processed.
Where are the boudoir sessions done?
Sessions that take place in your home or other location are included in your session fee. Charges for a hotel room are not included.
How many outfits can I bring?
I don’t set a time limit on these session and won’t book more than one per day. Typically they don’t last more than 3-4 hours including hair and makeup. Because we have all the time in the world, feel free to bring several outfits, though 3-4 outfits will give you a nice selection of images to choose from.
Do you provide hair and makeup services?
Yes! I do have several wonderful MUAs that I work with that provided high quality work. I do recommend to most clients that they consider a make up artist. This is a special, pamper yourself kind of day – you deserve to treat yourself!
What if I don’t know how to pose?
You are not expected to know how to pose. That is my job. I know how to use lighting and posing to their best effects to flatter any body type. If you want to practice your expressions in the mirror (yes, I know it will feel silly!), that may help you feel more comfortable the day of the shoot, but I will be there to guide you with your poses and expressions. Sometimes in preparing for their sessions, girls look at a LOT of different images thinking about what poses they want and they bring some pics with them to show me. I also suggest you do a search on Pinterest to get some more ideas. I have a boudoir board on Pinterest with a lot of good ideas (http://www.pinterest.com/dbuck1113/boudoir-poses/).We won’t exactly copy someone else’s image, but we can certainly draw inspiration from the pose or the mood of the shot and apply it to yours.
I have a little problem area that I don’t like about by body — is there anything you can do?
Regardless of age or body type, I specialize in offering all women an incredible opportunity to commission their own personal collection of stunning, modern boudoir portraits. Every woman is very different and has something incredible to capture. My beauty retouching includes skin perfecting, minor body contouring and feature enhancement. Every detail is covered from wrinkles to acne, scars, cellulite and stretch marks. You don’t have to worry about these little imperfections. I have everything covered.
Are boudoir pictures still flattering for someone without a model type figure?
Yes! I shoot women of ALL shapes, ALL sizes and ALL ages. Boudoir is truly for everyone. I use lighting and angles to enhance my client’s best features. Every woman’s body is unique and beautiful in it’s own way and when you book a boudoir session, you’ll begin to feel like the supermodel you truly are.
I’m a little uncomfortable about nudity.
Nudity is not a requirement for a boudoir session. Nudity is beauty in the human form and those sessions are awesome in their own right, BUT, you don’t have to be naked. You don’t even have to be in lingerie if you don’t want to. You can do your boudoir session dressed in a sexy dress, a sweater, or even a favorite pair of jeans. The sessions are tailored to your comfort level.
Do you do touch ups or airbrushing?
Yes. Every single photo that you order or that is in your product (album, wall art, etc.) will be hand retouched and edited. No one is perfect. No one has perfect skin and we all need a little help. The faces on the covers of magazines and in the media, ALL have been retouched. However, it’s important to me that my clients never look plastic. So while I do soften skin, remove blemishes (and scars) and bags under the eyes, (and whiten teeth if necessary), I try to still leave a very natural feel to the image. I also never alter someone’s body unless there is a bra making an odd bulge because of a particular position they are in or something like that. Then I will shape the skin in that particular area to make it look more natural.
Do you need a deposit to reserve my photo shoot?
Yes, I need a non-refundable half down (50%) deposit and a signed agreement to reserve your photo shoot.
How far in advance should I plan if I want to give the photos as a gift?
I recommend doing your photo shoot 3-4 weeks before you plan on giving it as a gift as a minimum. It takes about a week to process all your images. After you choose the photos you want in your album and any other prints or products, it will take about 10-12 days (sometimes a little more depending on the product) to receive them from the lab. While we can also rush an order if needed, it is always best to give an extra bit of time to keep the process as stress free as possible.
How do I book you for my boudoir shoot?
When you are ready to book your session, contact me and we’ll begin with a creative consultation. Because a boudoir session is a more intimate session, it is very important that we are a good fit. There is no cost or obligation for this consultation, just a chance for us to sit down and chat about you, your style, and your ideas. We will discuss how I will use my creative vision to help you to achieve truly magical results. If you decide that you feel comfortable with me and think that my creative vision and approach is right for your portraits, then we will pick a date, finalize location, ideas, concepts, wardrobe recommendations, and every last detail before your session. This is also when the 50% retainer and session agreement are signed.
Can we print our own Images?
In general – this is not a good idea.
Beyond the Box Photography offers a wide range of products and services for our clients. Many hours of work go into each individual finished image; and we control the production process end-to-end to ensure quality. Unfortunately, some people believe the companies offering print-only services produce identical quality. They do not. Also the prices they charge are for mass-produced, machine made, produced to the lowest-common-denominator product. That is the exact opposite of what we create here. Beyond the Box Photography only uses high quality professional photo labs to produce your products. These labs use paper and ink of the highest quality which are meant to last for generations. Cheap ink and paper fade quickly.
Still, there are some who want to print for themselves, and while we do not encourage it; we can supply high resolution images in a format suitable for this.
Do you give the client the printing rights to the pictures?
Yes! With high resolution USBs, I give my clients permission to print their photos. Also, my high resolution files are always free of any watermark or logo.
How can I view my pictures after the photo shoot?
About two weeks after your session, we’ll meet again and I will present your finished photographs and you can ooh and ahh over all your awesome portraits. During this time you will view your photographs in an awe-inspiring slideshow. This is the first time you’ll see your photographs and will be our final meeting. We will go through your photographs and narrow them down to your favorites and then make ALL of the decisions in regards to your portrait order.
Do you have online galleries?
Online galleries are only included for out of town clients who are unable to attend the Image Premier and Ordering Session.
Do you take credit cards?
Yes! I can accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover and PayPal.
Will my images be shown on your website or in your studio?
The images shown on my website, blog and in-studio displays and marketing materials are shown with the client’s permission only. You can decide to share approved images or to keep all of your images private. If you choose to keep your images private then your images will not be seen by anyone other than employees of Beyond the Box Photography. I fully understand and respect the privacy of my clients. Some ladies give us free reign to use whatever images we’d like, while others would prefer not to allow the use of their images or to only use those that do not show their face. Whatever you prefer is fine by us, and we assure you that your choice will be respected.
What about privacy?
We understand that, while exciting, a boudoir session is also nerve-wracking for some ladies, and we know you want privacy during your shoot. Our sets are closed to only Debi, her female staff where appropriate, and the client. Clients may elect to have a friend with them for encouragement if they’d like, but please – no boys allowed! Your photos are always processed and stored securely in the studio.
Sounds great — but I’m feeling nervous about my shoot!
Feeling nervous or self conscious about having a boudoir session? There’s no need worry, it’s natural to feel this way. I will guide you through each pose and know exactly which angles to capture for all body types to make you look like the beautiful woman you are. I’ll show you how to get those sexy poses and sultry looks. My sessions are designed to allow plenty of time to relax and feel comfortable which really shows in the final images. So leave everything up to me, just relax and enjoy yourself!
How many images will I have to choose from?
Many images are captured during your session. Afterward, each image is put through a careful selection process. You will see only the images that meet the standards of Beyond the Box Photography. Images that do not meet these standards are deleted permanently during the selection process. As a general rule you will see 50-75 images for every hour of shooting.
When will I see my photos?
The editing process takes about 2 weeks. Once your images are completed, I will contact you to schedule a time to go over your images.
